This publication is dedicated to all types of mass transit operating in modern Tajikistan. The main focus of attention is on the history of bus and trolleybus services in the two largest cities, Dushanbe and Khujand, including the intercity trolleybus line from Khujand — Gafurov. Other chapters in the book describe plans for the construction of a tramway system in Dushanbe and trolleybus projects in other cities. There is also information about freight and passenger cableways, narrow-gauge and children’s railways, as well as the development of bus services in the smaller towns of Tajikistan.
In addition, the book contains 12 appendices of tables including a chronology of all significant events in the development of mass transit, starting from the 1920s and covering the construction of roads, railways and the development of aviation, as well as a detailed list of references and other sources. More than 200 historical and contemporary photographs and more than 40 detailed route plans give the publication its outstanding value. The main text of the book is in Russian, although an abridged English version is available for readers from other parts of the world.
The authors of the book, Sergey Tarkhov and Dmitry Merzlov, are well-known and experienced specialists in the history of mass transit. The publication is designed in the same style as the Atlas of Urban Electric Transport of the Russian Federation, and all information in the book is correct to September 2020.
